Los Caballos Hike, Saturday June 12 at 7:30 am

To enjoy cooler hiking weather, on Saturday morning June 12 at 7:30 we will take a 2-mile hike with Unity hikers and friends on the Los Caballos Trail, on the west side of Show Low.

Where we will meet: Those who live near or in the direction of the church can meet at the church at 7:00 am and consider carpooling. Optionally, we will meet at the trailhead at 7:30 (See “Access to the trail” below.)

What to bring: Dress comfortably and wear comfortable but sturdy shoes suitable for hiking. Bring a bottle of water and if you wish, a light snack, a light weight back pack, head covering, a hiking stick and sun glasses and sunscreen.

If you enjoy hiking and the outdoors, please join us.  For questions, contact Don Fogle at 928-368-3620. Following is a description of the hike and other details.

Los Caballos Trail #638 description

Trail Highlights: Los Caballos Trail travels through burned and unburned forest, winding its way through beautiful ponderosa pine and pinon-juniper. The majority of the trail follows old logging roads as it winds along Joe Tank Ridge and through Bagnal Draw. The trail has been signed with blue diamonds since the Rodeo-Chediski fire in 2002 burned out many of the old markings. This trail offers an interesting look at the ecology that follows a forest fire.

Total distance is a 15.5 miles loop but there are options for those who want to do a shorter loop. Note that our Unity group will hike only about 2 miles, which will give a feel for the hike and make it more leisurely for our first time out.

Access to the trail: Drive south on the Deuce of Clubs, past Safeway and the Show Low Aquatics Center on your right and NPC on your left. At the stop light, turn right onto AZ 260, towards Heber and Payson. Drive about 2.8 miles until you come to Bison Ridge Trail on your left. About 0.1 miles past Bison Ridge Trail, turn left onto the first road you will come to. You will pass some apartments on your left. Continue on this road for 0.6 miles to the trailhead on your right. Turn into the parking area by the trailhead. This is where our group will meet.
