Singer describes the human predicament this way: throughout life we resist painful experiences, and those unresolved experiences become stored emotional patterns, or samskaras. These stored impressions create our likes, dislikes, fears, and expectations. We then spend our lives trying to manipulate the world to avoid discomfort and recreate pleasant experiences.

When life matches our preferences, we feel good.

When it doesn't, we suffer.

The problem isn't life itself; it is our resistance to life.
